End of Life Announced for First ZKsync Deployment
Matter Labs, the company behind ZKsync, has announced it will shut down ZKsync Lite in 2026. The decision signals a major move toward shifting all focus to ZKsync Era, the newer and more scalable version of its zero-knowledge rollup platform.
ZKsync Lite, launched in 2021, was the first mainnet version of the ZKsync zero-knowledge tech stack. It provided users with faster and cheaper Ethereum transactions using zk-rollups. Matter Labs says the protocol served its purpose and will be retired once key functions are transferred to ZKsync Era.
The announcement affects developers and users still operating on ZKsync Lite. Matter Labs has asked projects to start winding down and migrate assets to ZKsync Era. The team says wallets and apps connected to ZKsync Lite should plan the transition soon to avoid future issues.
Markets did not respond with major volatility following the news, but some smaller projects using Lite may see temporary uncertainty.
Market and Regulatory Impact
The move to shut down ZKsync Lite aligns with industry trends toward more scalable and efficient Layer 2 networks. Ethereum gas fees and speeds remain key concerns, making advanced rollups like ZKsync Era more attractive for long-term growth.
From a regulatory view, there is no direct impact. However, infrastructure changes could affect how decentralized apps (dApps) and DeFi platforms comply with future reporting and asset movement requirements.
Geopolitically, this change is part of a broader global shift toward optimizing blockchain performance. It reflects growing competition among Ethereum Layer 2 providers, especially in Asia and Europe, where blockchain adoption is expanding.
Background: What Is ZKsync?
- ZKsync is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs.
- Launched by Matter Labs, it aims to lower transaction costs and increase speed.
- ZKsync Lite debuted in 2021 as the first version of the network.
- ZKsync Era, launched later, offers compatibility with Ethereum smart contracts.
The newer ZKsync Era uses zkEVM technology, which allows developers to deploy smart contracts more easily. This has led to stronger adoption among DeFi and NFT platforms.
Recent Related Updates
Earlier this year, Matter Labs introduced an upgrade roadmap for ZKsync Era, focusing on performance scaling, decentralization, and ecosystem growth.
Last month, the protocol registered record growth in total value locked (TVL), crossing $800 million. This reflects growing interest in zk-rollups as a scaling method.
Several projects, including Argent and Gitcoin, have already begun moving off of ZKsync Lite in anticipation of the sunset date.
Next Steps
ZKsync Lite will remain functional until 2026. During this period, Matter Labs will provide tools and support to help developers and users safely move their assets and applications to ZKsync Era or other platforms.
Matter Labs has not released the exact shutdown date, stating only that it will come “sometime in 2026.”
