Former LA Officer Sentenced in Crypto Extortion Scheme

Michael Coberg, a former deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison on March 16, 2026, for his involvement in a cryptocurrency-related extortion scheme orchestrated by Adam Iza, known as the “crypto Godfather.” Coberg’s actions included aiding in a fake drug seizure and significantly assisting Iza in extorting a victim for $127,000.

Coberg, who pleaded guilty in September 2025 to conspiracy charges, was also ordered to undertake three years of supervised release and pay restitution to the victim. The court revealed that Coberg’s cooperation with Iza allowed the latter to carry out fraudulent activities, including a recorded video transfer that coerced the victim into relinquishing the funds. This operation was compounded by Coberg’s direct involvement in posing as an active-duty officer during the coerced interrogation.

Details of the Scheme

In August 2021, Coberg facilitated Iza’s scheme by detaining the victim and allowing the extortion to unfold unimpeded. The victim was subjected to threats that led to the “transfer” of $127,000, while Coberg, acting as private security, reportedly earned upwards of $20,000 each month from Iza’s operations. The case sets a new precedent regarding the legal implications for officers implicated in criminal enterprises, particularly in bearing the dual burden of duty to serve and propensity for corruption.

U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson, who presided over the case, condemned Coberg’s actions as a “profound abuse of governmental power.” He noted that Coberg’s position as a law enforcement officer was meant to instill trust within the community, yet he exploited that trust for personal gain.

The investigation uncovered that Coberg collaborated with Iza in staging a sham drug possession arrest in Paramount, further weaving his role in organized criminal activity. Iza himself, facing more serious charges including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, has been in federal custody since September 2024, illustrating how interconnected and complex the scheme was.

The Fallout and Future Implications

This case illustrates a growing concern within law enforcement regarding the intersection of cryptocurrency and organized crime. Experts have noted a surge in fraudulent activities where legitimate institutions face increased scrutiny for their sufficiency in combatting crime linked to digital assets. Coberg’s sentencing marks a potential shift in prosecutorial approaches toward law enforcement officers who engage in criminal conspiracies.

According to federal prosecutors, the case emphasizes the need for vigilant monitoring and accountability measures within police departments. As digital currencies continue to gain traction, similar investigations are likely to proliferate, signaling a call to action for reform and proactive measures against corruption and misuse of authority.

Looking ahead, experts are urging departments to enhance training and establish comprehensive protocols to prevent possible abuses related to cryptocurrency operations. It is crucial for law enforcement agencies to reinforce integrity within their ranks to uphold public trust, particularly in an era where fintech continues to evolve rapidly.
