Market Turbulence in South Korea

South Korea’s Korea Exchange halted trading on March 4, 2026, after the KOSPI index plummeted more than 10% amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, marking the second consecutive day of trading halts in a rapidly deteriorating market climate.

The KOSPI fell sharply in the early hours, triggering a circuit breaker at 0219 GMT when it dropped over 8%. Reports indicated that the index’s decline could reach as high as 13%, driven by fears surrounding the potential for war between the U.S. and Iran, escalating oil prices, and heightened geopolitical risks that could disrupt global energy supplies. According to report, the KOSPI retraced to around 5,322 to 5,439 points, erasing much of the optimistic gains seen at the beginning of the year spurred by confidence in artificial intelligence technologies.

Immediate Impact on Stock Market

The steep decrease in the primary index was closely followed by the KOSDAQ, which also experienced a drop exceeding 8%. This led to trading being temporarily halted across both major indices, as automatic stop measures were put in place to mitigate panic selling. The KOSPI 200 futures platform saw an immediate reduction of nearly 6%, encapsulating the intense sell-side activity in the market.

The correction reflects wider declines throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with the Nikkei index dropping between 2.5% and 3.7%. Economists and market analysts attribute this apprehensive reaction to fears of inflation tied directly to sporadic conflicts emerging from the Middle East, particularly Iranian missile strikes and risks associated with the Strait of Hormuz.

Market participants are bracing for ramifications as heightened tensions continue to loom. Not only has the unrest in the Middle East sparked volatile trading conditions, but it has exacerbated already existing vulnerabilities following a considerable run-up in index prices earlier in 2026, which had seen KOSPI rise by upwards of 26% to 37% due to AI-related optimism.

Investor Sentiment and Future Outlook

Looking ahead, many experts suggest that the ongoing geopolitical turmoil could lead to further fluctuations in trading patterns across markets. Some analysts see potential opportunities for bargain hunters should tensions ease; however, they also caution against the inflated valuations of AI stocks and related sectors, which may be in for a correction.

Market stabilization depends heavily on the international geopolitical landscape. Investors will be keenly monitoring any developments regarding diplomatic engagements between the U.S. and Iran, as well as potential fallout from recent actions within the Middle East. The current climate calls for caution, especially regarding future funding and investment in high-flying sectors that previously enjoyed sustained growth during a period of low international tensions.
