X Suspends Revenue Sharing for Undisclosed AI-Generated War Videos

X announced on March 3, 2026, it will suspend creators from its revenue sharing program for revealing armed conflict in AI-generated videos without proper disclosure. The move aims to combat misinformation amidst growing public concern over synthetic content that could mislead audiences.

The policy shift was announced by Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, who stressed the urgency of maintaining clear and authentic information during times of war. With advancements in AI technologies making it easy to produce misleading visual content, the platform intends to implement stricter rules to safeguard the audience and advertisers alike. Creators caught violating the disclosure policy for the first time could face a 90-day suspension from the revenue-sharing program, while repeat offenders risk permanent removal.

New Disclosure Requirements

Under the updated guidelines, creators must label videos depicting armed conflicts with a “Made with AI” tag. This requirement is part of X’s broader commitment to transparency and accountability, especially concerning potentially harmful content. The platform plans to utilize a combination of AI metadata detection, generative tool signals, and community reporting mechanisms through its Community Notes feature to enforce compliance.

These changes apply exclusively to monetized content from creators enrolled in the revenue-sharing program, which necessitates a subscription to X Premium, more than 500 verified followers, and 5 million organic impressions in the previous three months. This revision was particularly timely following recent U.S.-Israel military exercises in Iran, aligning with X’s efforts to enhance brand safety as advertiser apprehensions spike. As a result, ad revenues remain approximately half of what they were before 2022.

Criticism of the policy has emerged, highlighting its limitations. Detractors noted that the rules do not extend to AI-generated misinformation outside of war-related contexts, such as political manipulation or deceptive marketing tactics. The platform communicates plans for ongoing revisions to address these concerns in future updates, emphasizing a more comprehensive approach.

What Comes Next for Creators?

As X enforces these new standards, creators will need to adapt swiftly to avoid revenue penalties. Experts predict that this policy could significantly impact how content is produced, prompting more creators to invest in authentic storytelling and responsible innovation in content creation.

X’s initiative underscores a critical trend within the social media landscape: the growing recognition of AI’s power to reshape narratives and the imperative to limit its capacity to spread false information. As scrutiny on synthetic media intensifies, X’s approach may set a precedent for similar platforms, prompting industry-wide changes geared toward fostering transparency and trust.
