Grayscale Files for Hyperliquid ETF

Grayscale Investments has submitted a filing for the Grayscale HYPE ETF, aiming to list the fund tracking Hyperliquid’s HYPE token on the Nasdaq, marking a notable expansion into decentralized finance (DeFi) assets.

This recent move, made on March 20, 2026, reflects a pivot in Grayscale’s strategy as the firm seeks to capture a growing interest among institutional investors in the DeFi space. The application follows similar efforts by competitors such as Bitwise, VanEck, and 21Shares, highlighting the increasing demand for regulated cryptocurrency investment options.

Strategic Shift for Grayscale

The proposed ETF is significant in its focus on HYPE, the native token of Hyperliquid, which is considered the largest on-chain perpetual futures decentralized exchange. Notably, HYPE is less than two years old, making it the most nascent asset that Grayscale has sought to introduce as a trust.

Grayscale’s application also features Coinbase Custody as the custodian and CoinDesk Benchmark for pricing data, aiming to ensure transparency and security for investors. The shares of Grayscale HYPE ETF will only be issued in blocks of 10,000, with staking rewards currently prohibited, although that aspect remains open for future revision.

Grayscale manages over $35 billion in assets, giving it a robust infrastructure to introduce this new fund. The company’s move into the DeFi sector directly positions it against other prominent asset managers looking to diversify their portfolios with innovative financial products related to digital currencies.

Market Dynamics and Investor Interest

The growing institutional interest in cryptocurrency has resulted in a competitive race to launch various ETFs, especially focusing on DeFi tokens. Analysts suggest that Grayscale’s entry into this segment could enhance Hyperliquid’s liquidity position and offer investors an expanded array of tradable assets.

While the cryptocurrency market fluctuates with investor sentiment and regulatory developments, products like the HYPE ETF could attract significant inflows, especially as institutions look for compliant ways to gain exposure. Past trends indicate that when major financial firms like Grayscale enter new product categories, it often triggers wider participation in those markets.

Looking Forward

As Grayscale navigates this new venture, market watchers will be keen to see the SEC’s response, given its cautious stance on cryptocurrency ETFs in the past. Successful approval could serve as a vital litmus test for future DeFi-related products and further indicate a shift towards institutional acceptance of these assets.

In the broader context, the move to launch diverse cryptocurrency investment products reflects an evolving landscape for digital assets, potentially paving the way for more innovative financial instruments as regulatory frameworks develop.
