Memecoin Crash Triggers Fallout for Promoter

Hailey Welch, known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl”, faced significant backlash after the HAWK memecoin she promoted plummeted over 95% shortly after its launch on December 5, 2024. The crash has left her publicly addressing claims of wrongdoing amid death threats directed at her by disgruntled investors.

The HAWK memecoin, which soared to a market capitalization of nearly $500 million just hours post-launch, suffered a catastrophic drop to approximately $25 million. This significant downturn sparked allegations of fraudulent activities such as “rug pulling” and insider trading. Despite the public outcry, the FBI reviewed Welch’s accounts and cleared her of misconduct, as reported by Crypto News.

Investors Seek Accountability Amid Legal Action

Welch’s financial involvement with HAWK included a $125,000 up-front marketing payment and a 10% holding in the coin—locked for one year. She has since expressed her commitment to assisting affected investors as they pursue legal recourse. The ongoing class action lawsuit filed on December 19, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, cites 16 plaintiffs claiming $151,000 in losses against several parties involved in the launch, including overHere Limited and influencer “Doc Hollywood,” but does not name Welch as a defendant.

In her podcast, “Talk Tuah,” Welch candidly admitted her ignorance of the cryptocurrency landscape, stating she lacked foundational knowledge about the market when she got involved. She expressed remorse for trusting people she should not have, underlining her perspective as a novice in the complex crypto space. “I knew essentially zero about crypto,” she revealed, emphasizing her limited experience.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Market Caution

The high-stakes collapse of the HAWK memecoin has not gone unnoticed by regulators. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has received several complaints, and the FBI’s involvement signals an increased level of scrutiny for memecoins, which often operate on hype rather than solid fundamentals. Investors are urged to navigate this volatile landscape with extreme caution.

Welch’s team attributed the rapid sell-off to “sniper bots”, which they claim exploited the market’s volatility during its initial trading phase. Nonetheless, the ballooning losses have prompted skepticism around the integrity of the memecoin ecosystem. Given the current climate, experts predict that the market may continue to experience turbulence as more parties get embroiled in litigation and investigations related to HAWK and similar projects.

Legal challenges and investor sentiments likely weigh heavily on the future trajectory of HAWK and similar memecoins. The intersection of swift financial gain potential and regulatory oversight creates an unpredictable environment for traders, investors, and promoters alike. The industry must grapple with maintaining investor trust while navigating legal frameworks designed to protect them.
