Agentic AI Payments Pilot Completed Across Latin America

Banco Santander and Visa announced on March 12, 2026, the successful completion of a pilot program utilizing agentic AI to facilitate end-to-end payments across five Latin American markets: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay. This development is significant as it showcases the potential of AI to transform traditional payment methods, ensuring consumer protections while expediting transactions.

The pilot employed Visa’s Intelligent Commerce (VIC) platform, featuring AI agents that performed transactions on behalf of consumers within stringent consent guidelines. These agents managed various purchases, ranging from books in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay to chocolates in Brazil. The pilot confirmed the operational efficacy of AI agents in processing payments while adhering to regulatory requirements, including interoperability and secure data management.

Pilot Demonstrates Real-World Applications

Apart from technical feasibility, the pilot exemplified the practical implications of AI in ethnically diverse markets. Executives from both companies touted the achievements as groundbreaking steps towards integrating AI into everyday commerce. “This initiative is a major leap towards actualizing AI-assisted shopping,” said Matías Sánchez, global head of Cards and Digital Solutions at Santander. Catalina Tobar, Visa’s head of Growth Products for Latin America and the Caribbean, asserted that this trial builds the groundwork for a secure, scalable ecosystem for AI-driven transactions.

Despite its success, the trial did not necessarily indicate an immediate commercial rollout. According to reports, this exercise was framed within a controlled environment, similar to Santander’s concurrent trials with Mastercard in Europe, which also demonstrated the capabilities of autonomous agents in executing transactions.

This pilot reflects an emerging trend towards agentic commerce within the payment industry, where autonomous agents manage purchasing workflows. However, industry experts warn that further advancements will be necessary to tackle remaining challenges, such as ensuring security, protecting consumer privacy, and achieving seamless interoperability across various platforms.

Looking to the Future of Payments

The continued integration of AI into financial services points toward a paradigm shift in consumer behavior and payment methodologies. As financial institutions explore and implement AI-powered solutions, experts predict a rapid evolution in how transactions are facilitated and managed. The demand for autonomous transaction processes will likely compel firms to innovate, thereby enhancing customer experience and operational effectiveness.

The Santander and Visa pilot serves as a precursor for further advancements in AI-driven payments, with broad implications for the evolving world of digital finance. As regulatory frameworks adapt and technology evolves, the landscape of payment systems in Latin America may witness transformational changes, ensuring that technical innovations do not compromise consumer rights and protections.
