Crypto Firms Implement Widespread Job Cuts Amid Market Weakness

Gemini, Crypto.com, and Algorand have collectively laid off hundreds of employees recently, attributing these cuts to sluggish market conditions and the urgent shift toward artificial intelligence (AI) integration.

Gemini, for example, reduced its workforce by nearly 30% following a year marked by declining Bitcoin prices, which dropped from around $115,000 in September 2025 to approximately $60,000 in early 2026. The firm’s net loss in 2025 also amounted to $583 million, alongside declining trading volumes that kept market share below 1%, prompting executives to redirect resources toward AI initiatives. The cuts reflect a broader trend of layoffs across major crypto firms, reacting to macroeconomic pressures and the increasing competition for automated, data-driven services.

Crypto.com and Algorand Follow Suit

In another significant move, Crypto.com announced a 12% reduction in its workforce on March 19, 2026. CEO Kris Marszalek emphasized that affected positions “do not adapt in our new world,” highlighting the necessity for companies to integrate AI across their operations or face potential failings. This downsizing closely follows prior layoffs due to market downturns and the fallout from the FTX collapse in 2022 and 2023, indicating a ongoing pattern of workforce reductions in the crypto sector as companies grapple with persistent market challenges.

Similarly, Algorand took steps to bolster financial stability by laying off 25% of its staff on March 18, 2026. The Algorand Foundation cited “uncertain macro conditions” and a wider crypto downturn as reasons for its workforce realignment, allowing for a more sustainable focus on long-term goals. Both Crypto.com and Algorand’s layoffs occurred in close succession, totaling hundreds of job losses across firms that manage billions in trading volume, thus illustrating the depth of the current market retrenchment.

The persistent environment of falling crypto prices and dwindling trading activities has plagued the industry, with major players like Coinbase seeing market pressures intensify. Notably, in the backdrop, firms like Block have similarly faced workforce reductions, as technological shifts towards AI become more pronounced in the competitive landscape. Critics have termed this trend as “AI washing,” suggesting companies might be masking premeditated layoffs behind the guise of digital transformation.

Market Turbulence and Future Outlook

Analysts are closely observing how these layoffs affect the long-term viability of crypto firms. Industry experts caution that as automation continues to take center stage, companies may further cut costs by decreasing human resources in favor of technology-driven operational frameworks. This trend aligns with a broader economic environment that has seen tech giants like Meta and Atlassian also embark on workforce reductions, indicating a shifting paradigm toward efficiency amid persistent economic headwinds.

Looking ahead, crypto companies will likely intensify their efforts to navigate these turbulent waters by investing in AI and automation. However, the sector’s vulnerability to external market conditions remains a significant obstacle that may undermine instabilities exacerbated by previous industry crises, including the infamous FTX collapse.
